REPORT ON ANNUAL DEPARTMENTAL SEMINAR

On 16  October 2024, the Department of Political Science, Don Bosco College held its annual seminar on the theme “Western and Indian Political Thought”, aimed at providing students an opportunity to delve into the ideas of renowned political thinkers. The fifth-semester honours students were divided into eight groups, each tasked with presenting on a selected thinker. The topics covered were:

  • Group 1: Thomas Hobbes
  • Group 2: Bhagat Singh
  • Group 3: Aristotle
  • Group 4: M.N. Roy
  • Group 5: Hegel
  • Group 6: Swami Vivekananda
  • Group 7: Machiavelli
  • Group 8: Jawaharlal Nehru

The seminar began with an introduction by the host, Banrihun Kharsyiemlieh, followed by a welcome address by the department HOD, Sir Binendro N. Marak, and an encouraging address from the Vice Principal, Fr. John Paul Tirkey. In his speech, Fr. Tirkey shared a personal story from his own student days, recalling a similar experience where he had to present a paper. He reflected on how challenging but valuable such experiences were, helping him build confidence and critical thinking skills—traits he encouraged the students to develop as well.

Faculty members in attendance included Asst. Prof. Binendro N. Marak, Asst. Prof. Bristina D. Shira, Asst. Prof. Kimberley Nokimbe G. Momin, and Asst. Prof. Jordana Dipera R. Marak.

While some students struggled with their confidence during the presentations, their efforts in researching and engaging with the political ideas were evident. Overall, the seminar was a success, providing an enriching academic environment where students could deepen their understanding of political thought. The department looks forward to more such events.
