College NCC Cadets Ignite Intellectual Discourse through Debate Competition.
In a dynamic display of intellectual prowess, the NCC unit of the College, hosted a debate competition on September 9, 2023, within the College premises. The event drew an eclectic audience, including students, faculty members, and staff, all converging to deliberate on the theme "G20 is relevant in the Present Times."
The proceedings were inaugurated with a welcome address by Ms. Westerley R. Marak, the CTO of NCC. Ms. Marak passionately underscored the crucial role played by NCC in cultivating awareness of current affairs among young minds. She emphasized its significance in navigating today's swiftly changing global landscape.
Fr. John Paul Tirkey, the Vice Principal, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. In his address, he extolled the virtues of debates, emphasizing their ability to sharpen critical thinking skills, an invaluable asset for any discerning student.
Dr. Biswajit Paul, Head of the Department of Zoology, took the helm as the chairperson of the debate, expertly orchestrating the event. He introduced the distinguished panel of judges – Mr. Bravewell Mawthoh, Ms. Genevieve A Sangma, and Ms. Cherimchi M Sangma – whose collective expertise added a formidable dimension to the competition.
The competition unfurled in two captivating rounds. In the initial round, participants articulated their arguments either in favor or against the motion. The subsequent round demanded participants skillfully rebut the arguments put forth by their opponents.
The judges showered accolades on the commendable level of participation and the astuteness displayed in the arguments by the students. After rigorous evaluation, Lenysa M Marak emerged as the winner, with Martha K Marak securing the runner-up position. Kohila Devi Koch was honored as the third prize recipient, rounding off the list of distinguished awardees.
The panel of judges extended heartfelt congratulations to the winners and conveyed their appreciation to all participants for their unwavering dedication and intellectual prowess. They also commended the NCC unit for their meticulous efforts in orchestrating an event that served as a platform for nurturing critical thinking and informed discourse.
This competition not only raised awareness about the relevance of the G20 in the present times but also played a pivotal role in honing the students' critical thinking skills and equipping them with the art of effective argumentation. It was undeniably a resounding success.
