Awareness Programme on Legal Matters Held for the Students
In an effort to promote legal awareness and empower students with knowledge about their rights and responsibilities, the District Legal Services Authority of West Garo Hills, Tura, in collaboration with the Department of Political Science, Don Bosco College, Tura organized a comprehensive Legal Awareness Programme on various legal topics. The event, which covered crucial subjects like Traffic Rules and Regulations, M.V Act, NDPS Act, POSCO, Free Legal Services, Lok Adalat, Mediation, and Mental Health, was held on August 11, 2023, at the College Amphitheatre.
The programme commenced with a welcome by Shri Jeriko R. Marak, Advocate of the Tura Bar Association, to all the students in attendance. Fr Bivan Rodriques Mukhim, Principal of the college, expressed his appreciation and welcomed the resource persons, felicitating them with traditional Garo 'pandra'.
Shri Achintya Hajong, Legal Aid Counsel from the District Legal Services Authority, Tura, addressed the students on critical topics such as Traffic Rules and Regulations, M.V. Act, and the NDPS Act. He also shed light on the prevalent issue of drug abuse in Meghalaya, particularly in the Garo Hills region.
Smti Rania K. Marak, Chief Legal Aid Defence Counsel from the District Legal Services Authority, Tura, provided insights into the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and emphasized the importance of legal aid for individuals in need.
Highlighting the vital topic of Mental Health, Shmt Narbecca G. Momin spoke about the significance of maintaining good mental health among the youth. She urged students to seek guidance and support when dealing with mental health challenges, attributing family issues as one of the contributing factors to poor mental health in today's youth.
The event culminated with Shmt Grangchira Ch. Marak, Advocate of the Tura Bar Association, delivering the vote of thanks on behalf of the District Legal Services Authority. The programme successfully educated the students on a range of legal matters, enabling them to better navigate their rights, responsibilities, and the legal landscape.
