Department of Garo, Don Bosco College Explores Cultural Connections Between Sikkim and Meghalaya

Tura, 10th April 2023 - The Department of Garo from Don Bosco College in Tura embarked on a four-day visit to Sikkim, aimed at uncovering the distinctions and resemblances between the people of Sikkim and Meghalaya in terms of language, culture, and religion. The journey commenced on the evening of 5th April, 2023, as the team set off on their enlightening expedition.

On the following day, 6th April, the team departed from Siliguri and arrived in Sikkim at 2 p.m. Their first stop was the renowned Mahatma Gandhi Mart, which served as a vibrant hub for local commerce. The students explored the market, immersing themselves in the vibrant atmosphere and observing the diverse range of goods and products available.

Continuing their exploration on 7th April, the Department of Garo visited six notable locations. The itinerary included Banjahkri Falls Cafeteria, Rope Way, Do Drul Chorten Monastery, Tibetology Institute, Flower Exhibitions and Plant Conservation, and Sikkim Viewpoint. These visits provided the students with firsthand experiences of Sikkim's natural beauty, religious traditions, and botanical wonders.

The journey reached its pinnacle on 8th April with a visit to Changu, a place where snow-covered hills stretched as far as the eye could see. This scenic location allowed the students to witness the breathtaking beauty of Sikkim's snowy landscapes, leaving an indelible impression on their minds.

On 9th April, the Department of Garo bid farewell to Sikkim and returned to Siliguri, ultimately reaching Tura at 5 a.m. on 10th April, 2023. The trip proved to be an invaluable opportunity for the students to expand their understanding of the cultural connections between Sikkim and Meghalaya.

Notably, the Garo oral literature often references migration from Tibet and the utilization of yak's tail and cymbals. Interestingly, the Tibetology Institute's museum housed these very materials, serving as a tangible link between the two regions. The students were intrigued to discover that while language, religion, and culture differed significantly, they found certain folk materials that shared similarities with Garo traditions.

The Department of Garo, Don Bosco College, Tura's visit to Sikkim not only broadened the students' knowledge but also fostered a deeper appreciation for the diverse heritage and cultural tapestry of the region. The experience will undoubtedly contribute to their academic growth and understanding of the rich traditions that shape the lives of people in Sikkim and Meghalaya.
