Seminar conducted by the Department of Political Science

The Department of Political Science, Don Bosco College, Tura organized a seminar on the theme “Relevance of Right to Information Act, 2005” on 12th August 2022. The Resource Person was Smt. Bernita R Marak, Advocate, Tura Bar Association and an Alumni of the Department.

The Principal welcomed the Resource Person, Smt. Bernita R Marak, Advocate, by presenting a A’chik ‘Pandra’ and memento of the college. 

The session began with the welcome address by the Principal, Fr. Bivan R. Mukhim who highlighted the importance of RTI and urged the students to take the note of its implications and prospects to root out corruption in future generation. The IQAC Co-ordinator Dr. Barbara S Sangma, highlighted the relevance of Right to Information Act as it intends to promote accountability and transparency in a democratic country like ours.

The seminar was basically aimed at the students aspiring to study law and to know and learn how to secure access to information under the control of public authorities to promote transparency and accountability in the working of every public authority.

Smt Bernita R Marak, Advocate, highlighted how to file RTI, its procedure of approaching and submitting the RTI application, role of the Retaining officers /ROs in every   governmental department, Semi - governmental organization, Recognized Non-governmental organization and register Non-Governmental Organization under governmental funding etc. She also stressed that Right to Information is a Fundamental Right under Article 19(1) of the Indian Constitution. The Supreme Court held that in Indian democracy, people are the masters, and they have the right to know about the working of the government. Henceforth, the government enacted the Right to Information Act in 2005 which provides machinery for exercising this Fundamental Right.

Thereafter, Resource Person had an interactive session with the students.

Mr. Jebit Joria M Marak, a 5th Semester student of the Department delivered the vote of thanks and concluded the seminar.
