DBCT Observes World Food Day

 

The World Food Day (WFD) was organized by the department of Zoology and powered by IQAC of the college. The celebration was done for two days. On 15th October 2022, Saturday was Poster competition and on 17th October 2022, Monday was the Popular talk session. The details of the prgramme are attached below.

 

The programme on 17th was graced by the presence of Principal (Fr B R Mukhim), the IQAC Cordinator (Dr Barbara S Sangma), the resource person (Dr Arindam Barman) and staff and students of the college. The stage was hosted by Smt Ema Churik N Sangma and Shri Samuel Momin from the 5th semester.

 

In his speech the principal had emphasized on the importance of food availability and utilization and the inequality of food distribution amongst the population in Meghalaya.

The IQAC coordinator in her speech mentioned about the diversity of resources in Meghalaya and Garo Hills in particular which can be utilized for optimum food production and should be a resource for income generation amongst the population. She also mentioned about using food in a way to minimize wastage.

 

The popular talk was delivered by Dr Arindam Barman who emphasized on Microgreens. His presentation was lauded both by staff and students. In his presentation he emphasized how microgreens can neutralize undernourishment. Then he went to the details of the cultivation of microgreens, its health benefits, its production and method of cultivation, marketing strategizes etc. This could be a boon to the students if they could utilize this information for the benefit of society as this would in a way give a leverage to the economy of the area and also minimize the food scarcity.

 

Thereafter the prizes were distributed to the participants and winners of the Poster competition. The winners list are attached below. The prizes were given away by Shri sanjeev T Lyngdoh, Shri Jayatosh De and Dr Arindam Barman.

 

The programme ended with a vote of thanks from Shri Surjoron Hajong. Special thanks go to Fr B R Mukhim, Principal, Don Bosco College, Tura, to have given the necessary support for the programme. We the department are indebted to Barbara S Sangma (The IQAC coordinator) of the college for her valuable speech. And we are all thankful to Dr Arindam Barman, Asst Professor, Department of Horticulture, NEHU. Tura Campus, Tura to have spared his valuable time to deliver his very important information on microgreens. Last but not the least we in the department are extremely thankful to the students of 5th sem Zoology major and the students of all semesters of science stream to have made their presence and accomplished the goal of the department.

The programme culminated with the singing of the National Anthem.
