Seminar organized by Dept. of History
Department of History, Don Bosco College, Tura organized a seminar on 23 September 2022 on the theme, ‘Sources of Indian History’. Dr Amit Kumar Upadhyaya, an Asst. Professor of Benaras Hindu University (BHU) and a renowned numismatist who is serving as a General Secretary of Numismatic Society of India was invited as resource person for the event. The seminar was intended for the History (Hons) students of 1st, 3rd and 5th Semesters of the college.
The seminar was kick-started with Welcome Address by Dr Barbara S. Sangma, the coordinator of the IQAC cell of the college. In her speech she accorded warm welcome to the resource person as well as everyone gathered for the seminar. She also fondly remembered how Dr Amit Kumar Upadhyaya worked collaboratively when he was the HOD of the Dept. of History and Archaeology, NEHU, Tura Campus. Further she encouraged the students to make the most of the seminar.
Before handing over the stage to the resource person, an introductory speech was given by Mr Sanggra A. Sangma, the HOD of the department. He touched upon various things such as ‘Primary and Secondary sources’ for the study of History and ‘biases in writing of history’, etc.
A session by Dr Amit Kumar Upadhyaya mainly dealt with the ‘Sources of Ancient Indian
History’. At the outset he outlined that he wanted ‘dialogue’ with the students and would refrain from the usual ‘monologue’. Thus, the session was an interactive session which touched upon the totality of the topic ranging from all types of literary sources to the whole hog of archaeological sources. He also spoke about the calibre required to decipher and extract details and facts out of a given source. Being a numismatist himself, at last, he also gave a demo on how to read history from a coin.
The seminar ended with words of gratitude by Mr Sengprang A. Sangma, Asst. Professor.
The seminar was indeed a successful one; the students had a first-hand learning experience from the personage who is involved in and have an authority over the field of Ancient History, Culture and Archaeology.
