World Environment Day 2018 celebration

Don Bosco College in collaboration with the District Administration and IBDLP Basin Development, Tura jointly organized World Environment Day 2018. The programme was held at Don Bosco College of Teacher Education, Tura on 4th June at 11:00 am. The theme of this year’s celebration of World Environment Day is Beat Plastic Pollution.

Kumari Agatha K. Sangma, MLA 51 South Tura constituency was the Chief Guest. Mr Skylance G. Momin, IAS Former IGP Meghalaya Police was the Guest of Honour. Others present on the occasion were Shri Ram Singh IAS, Deputy Commissioner, West Garo Hills, Shri Raghavendra Kumar IPS, SP Tura, Shri P. R. Marak, Chief Conservator of Forest, Fr George Plathottam, Rector of Don Bosco College, Fr Bivan Rodriques Mukhim, Principal Don Bosco College Tura and a host of dignitaries.

Speaking on the occasion Agatha Sangma MLA urged the audience to endeavour to make Tura plastic free. She elaborated on negative impact of plastic on environment. She warned against the rampant use of plastic by the public and said that if we continue in this manner, the ocean will soon be inundated with non bio-degradable garbage. She distributed saplings to all the guests present for the celebration. Later she also planted a sapling in the campus.

Shri Skylance G. Momin, retired IGP and President of Council of Nokmas highlighting on the theme of the celebration requested those present to make every effort to conserve the biodiversity of Tura by saying NO to use of plastic.

Shri P. R. Marak, Chief Conservator of Forests spoke on the sacredness of preserving the pristine beauty of nature in the West Garo Hills. He congratulated the District Administration for going all out in banning plastic usage in the district.

The Rector of Don Bosco College Tura, Fr George Plathottam gave the keynote address. He highlighted on the ill effects of plastic. He said Garo Hills provide us with viable alternatives, thanks to bamboo and other forest products.

Fr. Bivan Rodriques Mukhim, the Principal used multimedia to convey a powerful message of reuse, reduce, recycle and refuse. He said that the plastic we used at home finds its way from the drains to the rivers and finally to the ocean, polluting and arresting marine life.

The students welcomed the guests with a song and performed a theme based skit on the occasion.
