Don Bosco College, Tura celebrated The International Women’s Day on 6^th March 2020. The Chief Guest for the occasion was Mrs. Sume Chandola B. Sangma, Secretary-Mothers’ Union and Headmistress, Smallville Secondary School, Tura. Basing her key-note address on the theme of the year that is “I am Generation Equality: Realizing Women’s Rights” she stressed on gender inequality existing in Garo Hills despite of the matrilineal system that is followed here. She highlighted the fact that in the urban area there is slight improvement when it comes to gender parity; but added that most Garo women in the rural areas are victims of domestic violence and domination by male relatives. She urged the Don Bosco college community to be positive and exhorted the women present there to feel that all women are beautiful as they are and that there is no need to change as far as physical appearance is concerned. Mrs. Sangma also focussed on some of the age-old practices which are a hindrance in the advancement of the Garo community as a whole and said that they should be done away with. The Guest of Honour, Ms. Sengrikchi N. Marak, DSP, Tura, who happened to be an alumna of the college spoke on the topic “Women Safety”. Others on the spoke on the occasion are Rev. Fr. Bivan Rodriques Mukhim, Principal, Don Bosco College, Tura and Dr. Madhusudahan Saha, Associate Professor, Dept. of Chemistry, Don Bosco College, Tura.

Earlier, Raj M. Marak, a student from the Second Semester English Honours set the tone for the celebration with his devotional dance and made everyone lift their hearts to God as they followed the hymn “You are my strength when I am weak/ You are the treasure that I seek….”. This was followed by a group song “You are Beautiful” sung by the students of Second Semester and dedicated to women.
