NATIONAL WORKSHOP ON CONSERVATION OF BIODIVERSITY

The Department of Zoology, Don Bosco College in collaboration with Department of Horticulture, North Eastern Hill University, Tura Campus and Department of Botany, Goalpara College, Assam jointly organized a National Workshop on Conservation of Biodiversity on 28th December 2018 at the main Conference Hall, NEHU Tura Campus.

Mrs. Nazia R. Marak, Chief Conservator of Forest, Garo Hills was the Guest of Honour at the inaugural programme. In her speech she said that there is mass destruction of forest and green covers in Meghalaya. “The theme of the workshop is very apt as it helps us to realize that we need to conserve the biodiversity of the world,” she said. She added that biodiversity is required for the continuity of LIFE. She added that in the last few years over 70% of plants and animal species have become extinct. There is the need to come together not only to deliberate but to work towards conservation of the biodiversity.

Mr. Crospila Marak, Retd. District Horticulture Department Officer, Government of Meghalaya was the Guest of Honour. In his speech he asked those present to go to the far flung villages and speak to the students regarding biodiversity and it’s conservation.

Others who were present at the dais were Prof Sugata Gurudev, Pro Vice Chancellor In-charge, North Eastern Hill University, Tura Campus. She welcomed the gathering and spoke of the responsibility of every human person to conserve the biodiversity and the environment. Dr. Sunil Kumar, Head Department of Horticulture, North Eastern Hill University – Tura Campus said that the discussions will be helpful in changing the outlook on biodiversity and recommendations will be made to the policy makers.

The principal of Gaolpara College, Assam and Don Bosco College, Tura were also present at the inaugural programme. Twenty students of Don Bosco College attended the one day workshop.

Dr. Madhusudhan Saha from Chemistry Department, Don Bosco College and Dr. Ratan Chakraborty from Dept. of Botany, Don Bosco College, Tura presented papers during the workshop.
